Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer reported on Thursday that his team successfully distributed 1,061 food rations for 1,025 people in just one day, setting a new record in their effort to assist the elderly and vulnerable individuals.
"Yesterday we served 871 people, and today the daily increase exceeded our capacity to meet the growing demand for assistance," explained Ferrer, who has intensified his work since his release from prison.
The demand has been so high that the food ran out earlier than expected, he noted.
In the videos, dozens of elderly individuals can be seen waiting for a food ration on the sidewalk.
In addition to providing food, Dr. Nelva Ismarays Ortega, Ferrer's wife, attended to more than fifty patients, a number similar to that of Wednesday, when another 53 people knocked on her door seeking medical assistance.
The opposition member explained that the shifts have extended to 16 hours of daily work, which is why the initiative has required the involvement of more volunteers to maintain attention.
In this regard, he emphasized that this humanitarian work carried out for years by the opponents of the Patriotic Union of Cuba in Santiago is only possible thanks to the solidarity of exiled Cubans, who provide resources to sustain the humanitarian aid.
He recalled that his initiative—interrupted during his time in prison since 2021—has been targeted by the Cuban regime and other hostile sectors.
In the context of a severe crisis in Cuba, thousands of elderly individuals have been left without support on the island.
After Ferrer was released after spending three years and four months in prison for participating in the anti-government protests on July 11, 2021, hundreds of people have gone to his home, in the Altamira neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, in search of food.
The Ferrer house has become an improvised food distribution point, where people desperate to obtain basic products to feed their families come daily since the Covid-19 pandemic.
