Cubans arrested after shooting in Cancun's Hotel Zone

The operation was searching for a missing minor and mobilized several law enforcement agencies. Investigations are ongoing.


At least seven people, reportedly of Cuban origin, were arrested early Monday morning in the exclusive residential area of Pok Ta Pok, located in the Hotel Zone of Cancun, following reports of gunfire.

According to reports from local media, the events took place at kilometer 7.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard, when investigative agents were conducting a search in the area and were fired upon. In response to the aggression, the authorities activated the "Red Code", requesting reinforcements to manage the situation.

Elements of the Tourist Police, the Secretariat of the Navy, the Secretariat of National Defense, the State Police, and the National Guard responded to the emergency and cordoned off the area.

Witnesses reported that at least four unmarked police vehicles arrived at the site, and armed men got out of them. Moments later, the agents entered a house while shouting "Where is the girl!", "Return the girl!", and "Everyone on the ground!", followed by at least four gunshots, reported QR Ahora - News from Quintana Roo.

During the operation, they entered an establishment known as Gren 16, where they managed to detain several individuals, including men and women, who are allegedly of Cuban nationality, local media reported.

The detainees were transferred to the facilities of the Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo for processing.

Investigations are ongoing, and more details about the operation and the legal situation of the detainees are expected to emerge in the coming hours.

In recent years, Cancún has been the scene of various arrests of Cuban citizens involved in different incidents.

For example, in April 2024, three Cuban citizens, identified as Yosbel “L”, Roinel “M”, and Monroy “O”, were arrested for allegedly kidnapping another Cuban in an abandoned house in the city. The victim was rescued and the detainees faced charges of kidnapping. ​

In addition, in March 2023, the Mexican police arrested several Cubans accused of being part of a gang dedicated to home theft. This group also included citizens from Colombia and Venezuela. The arrests took place in the Aloja subdivision, following multiple reports of thefts in residential areas of the city.
