The National Police of Spain has arrested six Cubans aged between 21 and 39, accused of an alleged group sexual assault against a 19-year-old young woman in the municipality of Telde, on the island of Gran Canaria.

The events occurred in the early hours of March 16 inside an industrial building located in the El Goro area where they were working.

The victim previously knew her assailants "through leisure and work," as stated in an interview with Radio Nacional de España by the spokesperson for the Superior Police Headquarters of Las Palmas.

Account of the events: Confusion, trauma, and an immediate report

The police intervention occurred after the victim's partner and father alerted the authorities, following the young woman recounting what had happened to them while in a state of nervousness, agitation, and confusion.

The young woman, who arrived home by taxi after the alleged attack, is said to have sent a message to her partner stating that "everyone had touched her," a phrase that was key in initiating the police investigation.

Immediately afterwards, due to the young woman's deteriorated emotional and physical state, her relatives took her to the Maternal and Child Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. At the medical center, the urgent care protocol was activated in response to suspicions of sexual assault.

A duty officer from the Family and Women's Care Unit (UFAM), specialized in this type of crime, went to the hospital to collect the victim's initial testimony.

During the interview, the young woman stated that, although she could not remember all the details of what happened because she was under the influence of substances and in a state of semi-consciousness, she was certain that she had been sexually assaulted by at least three men.

Authorities emphasize that the lack of clarity in the initial account does not invalidate the narrative or the victim's credibility; rather, it reflects the physical and psychological impact of the event.

Identification and arrest of the alleged attackers

Following this report, the National Police opened an investigation that lasted for more than two weeks.

Los agentes encargados del casoThey collected testimonies from witnesses, images from security cameras, and other evidence that allowed them to identify the alleged perpetrators of the multiple sexual assault.

Finally, after completing the necessary procedures, six men were arrested, all of them of Cuban origin.

The arrests took place in various locations throughout the municipality of Telde and its surroundings.

The operation was carried out discreetly, given the sensitivity of the case and the need to ensure the protection of the victim during the judicial process.

The detainees have no criminal records and, according to police sources cited by the Spanish press, at least two of the detained Cubans are in an irregular administrative status in Spanish territory.

Once at the police station, it was confirmed that two of the detainees were in an irregular situation in the country, which was reported to the relevant authorities on immigration matters.

After the police actions were completed, the six detainees were placed at the disposal of the judiciary. The case has been referred to the relevant investigating court, which will now determine the precautionary measures as well as the progress of the criminal proceedings.

Social impact and institutional protocols

This case adds to other recent episodes of group sexual violence that have occurred in various locations across Spain.

In many of these cases, the victim's testimony and the early activation of response protocols have been crucial for the arrest of the alleged perpetrators and the progress of the judicial processes.

From now on, it will be the court's task to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge the six detainees with the crime of sexual assault in a group, based on what is stipulated in the Spanish Penal Code.

Depending on the severity of the facts, they could face sentences ranging from 12 to 15 years in prison for each perpetrator, if it is confirmed that there was joint participation without the victim's consent.
