Three citizens of Cuban origin were arrested in the city of Tampa, in Hillsborough County, Florida, for their alleged involvement in the systematic theft of high-value trucks.

The three individuals were arrested following an extensive investigation conducted by the Vehicle Theft Unit of the Sheriff's Department, which uncovered the workings of a highly organized criminal network dedicated to the theft of heavy vehicles.

The criminal operation dates back to September 2024 and is believed to have been active for several months in at least six counties in Florida, including Hillsborough, Polk, Hernando, Pasco, Sarasota, and Pinellas.

Authorities believe that the trio stole multiple semi-trailers and dump trucks, vehicles that are essential for the construction, logistics, and goods transportation industries.

The estimated value of the stolen vehicles exceeds six million dollars.

Many of the affected companies saw their projects halted, faced delays in public and private works, and had to bear the additional costs resulting from the sudden loss of their operational vehicles.

Severe accusations: Charges of grand theft and violation of the RICO Act

Each of the detainees faces multiple counts of grand theft for vehicles valued at over $100,000.

However, beyond these individual charges, the seriousness of the case has led to them also being indicted for conspiracy under the RICO Act (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act).

This federal legislation, originally enacted to combat organized crime, applies when it is shown that the crimes committed are part of a broader, persistent, and hierarchical criminal structure.

Researchers believe that the group was not acting spontaneously, but rather responding to a premeditated logistics plan, possibly with additional support from individuals who have yet to be identified.

"Thanks to the tireless work of our specialized unit and collaboration with the State Attorney's Office, we have managed to dismantle a criminal operation that was directly harming those who drive our economy," emphasized Chronister.

The investigation, which lasted approximately a month, included surveillance activities, vehicle tracking, analysis of security camera recordings, and collaboration with various police agencies from the involved counties.

Method of operation: Planning, coordination, and execution

Although the authorities have not yet disclosed all the details of the case, it is believed that the suspects operated during nighttime hours or in poorly monitored areas, selecting high-value vehicles parked in industrial zones or construction sites.

It is also being investigated whether they had technological tools to disable GPS tracking systems or electronic security devices installed in the trucks.

The coordinated manner in which they operated suggests a deep knowledge of the logistics sector, as well as a network of contacts for the resale or clandestine transportation of the stolen vehicles, both within and outside the state of Florida.

Despite the arrests made, the Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and it is possible that there are others involved in this criminal organization.

Efforts are underway to determine whether there were accomplices in the illegal acquisition of the stolen vehicles, as well as potential links to networks involved in the sale of parts or the illegal transport of machinery.
