A dispute over a pair of shoes ended in a brutal assault and serious criminal charges for a young man in Miami-Dade County, police authorities reported.
According to the broadcaster Local 10 News, Jorge “Zubi” Zubigaray, 24, ambushed the victim —a family acquaintance— in the parking lot of a shopping center in the city of Doral. The assault occurred on Thursday night and was recorded by surveillance cameras.
The images show Zubigaray arriving at the scene in a black Porsche Macan, owned by his girlfriend. The young man confronted the victim, who had been spending time with friends at the Twin Peaks restaurant, located at 8700 NW 18 Terrace.
According to the police report, Zubigaray delivered a strong blow to the other young man, who fell to the ground apparently unconscious. Immediately afterward, he violently removed the shoes the victim was wearing and fled the scene.
Rescue teams from the Miami-Dade Fire Department arrived at the scene and found the victim, also 24 years old, with a brain hemorrhage. He was urgently transferred to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Witnesses described Zubigaray as an impulsive person, and authorities confirmed that his mother had a friendship with the mother of the assaulted young man.
After the investigation, Zubigaray turned himself in to the authorities on Friday with the assistance of a defense attorney. He was taken to the Miami-Dade County detention center around 1:20 p.m. and appeared before a judge the following day.
The young man is facing charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. The judge set his bail at $20,000 and ordered him not to have any contact with the victim.
The arraignment hearing has been scheduled for April 28 at 9:00 a.m., and will be presided over by Judge Carlos H. Gamez of the Miami-Dade judicial circuit.
