Heavy rains and thunderstorms batter western Cuba: Warning issued over flood risks

Intense rains and thunderstorms are impacting the western part of Cuba, with a risk of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Caution is advised due to potential effects.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms are affecting several provinces in western Cuba this Tuesday, particularly Artemisa, Havana, and the border area between Mayabeque and Matanzas, where unstable weather conditions and significant water accumulation in a short period are being reported.

The alert was issued by Cuban meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez, who explained in a post on his Facebook profile that these events are due to the previous activity of a cold front, which is causing showers, frequent thunderstorms, and possible local flooding.

"These rains may be locally heavy," Ruisánchez warned, urging the public to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas or those with poor drainage, due to the risk of sudden floods.

It also warned about the possibility of electrical discharges and gusts of wind during the passage of the storms.

In a previous post, the specialist explained that the cold front is located near the western tip of Cuba. Since this morning, scattered showers and isolated rain have been observed in the western region, associated with a more humid and unstable flow coming from the south, which precedes the frontal system.

The front extends from the western Atlantic to the northwest Caribbean Sea, generating abundant cloud cover and activity of showers, rain, and thunderstorms. It is expected to continue moving slowly eastward, reaching western Cuba by the afternoon, with precipitation that could be locally heavy.

Ruisánchez himself recently warned that a cold front would arrive in western Cuba this Tuesday, pointing out that the lowest temperatures will be recorded on Thursday.

In its statement, it was announced that starting from the morning of this Tuesday, cloud cover would increase, with chances of showers, which would become more frequent in the afternoon, not ruling out the occurrence of some thunderstorms.

"The wind will be variable and weak, blowing between the southwest and west at speeds of 10 to 25 km/h. By Wednesday the 9th, it will start blowing from the north at speeds of 15 to 30 km/h. As for the sea conditions, low waves are expected, gradually increasing until reaching swells along the northwestern coast," he said.
