The increasing presence of Cuban migrants in Mexico over the last five years, prompted by the mass exodus of citizens from the island seeking to reach the United States, has been marked by serious dangers due to the rise in violence and organized crime networks in Mexican cities and towns.

During their transit or stay in the country, Cubans have been frequent victims of thefts, scams, extortion, disappearances, kidnappings by criminal gangs dedicated to human trafficking, and even murders.

At least six Cubans remain missing since December 2024, with no information about their whereabouts to date. According to reports from family members, the group was in Tapachula with the intention of continuing their journey to the border with the U.S.

At the end of March, local press confirmed the increase in cases of extortion, disappearances and kidnappings of immigrants waiting in that city for travel permits to cross Mexico, which has created a climate of fear among foreigners, including Cubans.
