Local authorities in Santiago de Cuba announced on Monday the distribution of one pound of rice per consumer, as part of the fulfillment of the Standard Family Basket for the month of March.
According to TVSantiago's official Facebook page, the measure aims to alleviate the prolonged shortages faced by the people of Santiago, where rice is an essential food.
The delivery will be carried out through the supply booklet, a centralized distribution mechanism that has been in place for decades in the country.
In addition to rice, laundry and personal soap will be distributed, depending on the composition of the family unit, for the March-April bi-monthly period.

Similarly, the Dairy Company of Santiago de Cuba confirmed the distribution of powdered milk for children aged 0 to 20 days, as well as for pregnant women and minors with chronic illnesses.
This latest news has generated multiple reactions on social media, where citizens expressed their discontent and concern over the exclusion of children older than 20 days in the delivery.
"And what are they going to distribute for children aged 2 to 6? They need it too, in case they forgot," commented an internet user.
The announcement has reignited the debate about the deep food crisis that Cuba is facing, characterized by scarcity, inflation, and an increasing dependence on imports, worsened by structural and logistical issues within the rationing system.
This month, Vietnam donated 10,000 tons of rice to the island to support the distribution of the basic basket amid the crisis.
The authorities did not specify when the full delivery of the announced products will be completed or if the coverage will be extended to other vulnerable groups.
