In December of last year, a collision between a trailer and a jeep at the entrance of Granma province left one of the drivers with minor injuries. Furthermore, in January 2024, at least three people died and several others were injured after the crash of a tourist vehicle and a trailer loaded with oranges in Sancti Spíritus province.
The condition of Cuban roads, including potholes and lack of proper signage, has been identified as contributing factors in many of these accidents.
In April 2024, a Toyota jeep overturned after falling into a pothole on the National Highway, before the checkpoint in Aguada de Pasajeros, in the province of Cienfuegos.
Cuban authorities have acknowledged that 76% of the more than 71,000 kilometers of roads in the country were in fair or poor condition in 2019, and since then, the situation has shown little to no improvement.
Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident that occurred on Monday to determine the causes and prevent similar incidents in the future.
