A 31-year-old young man who was seriously injured in a traffic accident that took place last Tuesday in the municipality of Chambas, province of Ciego de Ávila, passed away this Sunday.
According to confirmed by the Cuban activist Guillermo Rodríguez Sánchez, based on family sources, Elier Varela Torna could not survive the severe burns and injuries that his body suffered.
The young man, a resident of Punta Alegre, had been hospitalized in an Avileño hospital since the incident occurred on April 17th.
Varela was reported as a patient in critical condition and had second and third degree burns.
On social media, a call for help was made to obtain medical supplies and materials for their care and recovery. Their loved ones mentioned that they mainly needed silver sulfadiazine cream, nitrofurazone, gauze, and gloves.
Guillermo Rodríguez, in the note announcing the death, thanked those who contributed to improve the young man's condition, and said: "Thank you to everyone who kept up with our posts, to those who donated gauze, a bit of ointment, and even transferred some money without us asking so that their loved ones could ease their expenses."
With her death, the number of victims of the serious traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Chambas, Ciego de Ávila province, rises to three.
The accident occurred on the road to Punta Alegre, in an area known as Las Vegas, near the community of El Asiento.
A "guaripola" (a motorized tricycle used for passenger transport) collided with a B-8 model truck traveling in the opposite direction, in an area with poor visibility due to smoke from the burning of a sugar cane field.
The first fatalities were identified as Nivaldo Manuel Buchillón Jiménez, 72 years old, who died at the scene of the accident; and Eglys Castillo Rodríguez, 45 years old, who passed away during transportation to the hospital due to severe polytrauma.
Both were residents of the coastal town of Punta Alegre, a community that is now deeply shaken by the tragedy.
At that time, five individuals were reported injured, including the recently deceased young man. Elier Varela suffered from burns and a skull fracture; Eusebio Rey Boloy, 32 years old, had multiple traumas; José Pérez Cardozo, 59 years old, sustained minor injuries; Carlos Álvarez González, 58 years old, also had minor injuries, and the truck driver underwent emergency surgery and was reported to be in critical condition.
