Trump criticizes the former FBI director for controversial Instagram post

Trump criticized former FBI director James Comey for an Instagram post that contained the number "8647," which was deemed a threat. Comey defended himself, claiming that he did not intend to incite violence.

The president Donald Trump slammed former FBI director James Comey this Friday for an Instagram post that government officials deemed "a threat".

On Instagram, in a now-deleted post, Comey shared a photo of the number "8647" made from seashells in the sand, with the caption "Great shell formation on my walk along the beach".

In the U.S., the number "86" can mean "to eliminate," according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, while "47" could refer to Trump's term as the 47th president of the United States. From this, Trump and his allies inferred that it was a call to violence against the president.

Trump, in an interview on Fox this Friday, stated that Comey knew what he was expressing.

"He knew exactly what that meant. A child knows what that meant. If you are the director of the FBI and you don't know what that meant, it meant murder," the president stated.

Some Trump supporters, including journalist Laura Loomer, claimed that Comey is inciting violence against the president.

"FBI interviewed former director James Comey today regarding his threat to assassinate President Trump. He belongs in prison. When will people start going to jail for spying on Trump and trying to destroy his life?" he wrote on X.

Comey, in his defense, argued that he imagined the message in the placement of the shells was political, but that he did not think it would be associated with a call to violence against Trump.

"I never thought of it, but I oppose violence of any kind," wrote Comey in another post on Instagram.

Trump, who fired Comey during his first term, added: "Well, he apologized because he was hit... he's a very bad guy."

For her part, Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, argued in a post on X that the United States Secret Service was investigating Comey's post.

"The disgraced former FBI director James Comey has just called for the assassination of POTUS Trump," he said. "A spokesperson for the United States Secret Service stated that the agency is aware of the posts and takes 'rhetoric like this very seriously'."

Comey, who was dismissed from his position in 2017, has accused Trump of "lack of ethics and egocentrism." In his book A Higher Loyalty, he describes the President of the United States as a bully, a "congenital liar, devoid of emotions, and disconnected from the truth."
