The case of Darien adds to other similar stories that have occurred in recent months. In April 2024, another young man from Santiago, Yoendris Hardy Hernández, died alone in Russia after suffering a heart attack, and his family sought help to repatriate his remains. More recently, in February 2025, the daughter of a Cuban who died in that country pleaded for humanitarian support to bring his body back to Cuba.

While awaiting official details, messages from the community that knew him in Cuba and abroad are unanimous: "Fly high, Darien."
