A violent incident disrupted the peace of the popular festival Best of the Best in downtown Miami this Sunday afternoon, when a police officer opened fire on a driver who, according to official reports, struck the officer while directing traffic near Bayfront Park.
The incident left a 21-year-old man injured by gunfire and caused a stampede among the attendees of the event, which attracted over 12,000 people this year.
A video shared by the Instagram account Only in Dade showed a person handcuffed and apparently bleeding being attended to by paramedics, while other images captured the moment when attendees fled in terror after hearing the gunshots.
What is known about what happened?
The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast Second Street and Biscayne Boulevard, an area adjacent to the festival venue.
According to information provided by various official sources and local media, an officer from the Miami Police Department who was involved in the security operation for the event was struck by a vehicle, which caused the officer to open fire on the driver.
One of our officers was at a traffic control checkpoint when -we are still investigating what exactly happened- but we know that a vehicle made physical contact with the officer.
"As a result of that incident, gunfire occurred," explained Miami Police Deputy Chief Armando Aguilar, in statements collected by Local 10 and other media outlets.
The police have not yet determined whether the hit-and-run was intentional or if charges will be filed.
It has not been disclosed whether there was an exchange of gunfire, although Aguilar noted that the exact circumstances are still under investigation.
Immediate consequences
The driver, whose identity has not been revealed, was shot multiple times and was transported in critical but stable condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The injured agent sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the same hospital.
"Our priority was to immediately assist the shooting victim, who was inside the vehicle," confirmed Aguilar, adding that the officers themselves provided first aid at the scene.
Chaos and confusion in the midst of the festival
The shooting caused panic and chaos among the festival attendees, although the event was not canceled.
Many ran to safety, and there were reports of lost personal belongings and even minor injuries due to the stampede that occurred near one of the entrances, where security checks were taking place.
According to a statement from the organizers of the Best of the Best Music Fest, the incident "occurred in the vicinity" but "was not connected to the event."
They added that "the person involved was not a festival attendee, and the situation did not occur within the event's venue."
The organization also highlighted that, in its 19 years of history, the festival had remained incident-free and thanked the support of the authorities.
"For us, safety is paramount, and we maintain a continuous cooperative relationship with the City of Miami and law enforcement," they concluded.
Ongoing investigation
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is leading the investigation into the shooting, as part of the standard protocol in cases involving a police officer.
Authorities are also reviewing body camera footage and surveillance videos from nearby businesses to clarify the events.
"So, we don't know exactly what happened", Aguilar insisted.
"What we do know is that there was physical contact between the agent and the vehicle he shot at."
More than 50 officers were assigned to the security detail of the festival, which is considered the most important Caribbean music event in North America, according to CBS News and Miami Herald.
The event also marked the return of the festival after a two-year hiatus.
