Cuban authorities are investigating an alleged murder case that occurred in the municipality of Sancti Spíritus, after the lifeless body of a 59-year-old man was found in his home, located at 218 Diego Velázquez Street, in the Jesús María popular council.
According to Radio Sancti Spíritus, Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Rodríguez Carmenate, head of the criminal investigation unit in the province, reported that the case was brought to the attention of the police by the deceased's son, who stated that his father had died of natural causes.
However, the visible presence of blood led the doctor responsible for certifying the death to immediately request the intervention of Forensic Medicine.
The body was transferred to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital, where a forensic autopsy was performed.
The results revealed injuries to the neck and a fracture of the trachea, which conclusively established the cause of death: mechanical asphyxiation due to strangulation.
The investigators gathered testimonies from the neighbors, who revealed that the deceased lived with his son and a nephew.
"They were accustomed to verbally abusing him and denying him medical assistance, despite the ailments the deceased was experiencing, which included a foot ulcer and liver cirrhosis resulting from prolonged alcohol consumption," the officer stated.
The suspicions were confirmed when both relatives were arrested and questioned. During the process, the nephew confessed to being the perpetrator of his uncle's death.
"The victim's nephew admitted to causing his uncle's death by using his hands to choke him and subsequently applied his knee, pressing on that area until he caused the fatal injuries," clarified Rodríguez Carmenate.
Both detainees agreed to participate in a reconstruction of the event in the presence of prosecutors, lawyers, and witnesses.
At this moment, they remain in the Provincial Criminal Investigation Unit, in provisional detention for the crime of murder.
The lieutenant colonel stated that the investigation remains open with the aim of determining the possible involvement of other individuals and fully clarifying the circumstances of the crime.
This crime has shocked the community of Espíritu, where residents are still trying to come to terms with the events surrounding the violent death of the man.
