Police kill a woman accused of shooting at her daughter in Tampa

The deceased woman was 46 years old.

Agents of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) shot and killed a 46-year-old woman in the city of Tampa following a dramatic confrontation inside her home.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, began with a call to 911 reporting a suspected robbery, but escalated into a case of domestic violence with fatal consequences.

The incident took place at a residence located in block 7500 of Carolton Circle, where Rosamond Brookins lived with her adult daughter, her granddaughter, and another person who was renting a room in the house.

Local media reported that at 4:41 a.m. on May 25th, the police responded to an alert about a robbery in progress. However, upon arriving at the scene, they encountered a much more complex situation.

The first responders managed to evacuate an adult man and a girl, Brookins' granddaughter, and found an injured woman inside the house. The victim, Brookins' daughter, had a gunshot wound to her hand and was quickly treated and transported to a nearby hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.

According to the official account, Brookins had shot at his daughter during a heated family dispute and then barricaded himself in a room of the home, refusing to cooperate with the authorities and brandishing a weapon.

Police intervention: Body cameras captured the outcome

The agents attempted to make contact with the woman, urging her multiple times to change her stance and drop the weapon.

Upon receiving no response, the officers forced their way into the room where Brookins had taken refuge.

According to official reports, she was found lying on the ground, gripping a gun.

Despite the clear and repeated orders to drop the weapon, the woman reportedly raised the firearm towards the officers, prompting Agent Joshua Thomas to fire in self-defense and to protect those present.

“Our agents acted quickly to protect the life of a woman and a child in imminent danger,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

The shooting, which occurred exactly at 4:55 a.m., was recorded by the body cameras worn by the officers, as is standard procedure in this type of intervention.

Ongoing investigation and agent background

Joshua Thomas, who fired the fatal shots, has ten months of service with the HCSO and has six years of prior experience with the Temple Terrace police.

He has no history of using lethal force.

He is currently on administrative leave while the case is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), as part of the protocol when an officer discharges their firearm while on duty.

The sheriff Chronister confirmed that, preliminarily, the action has been deemed justified: “This is a tragic situation that no family should have to endure.”

A family environment marked by conflicts

Authorities reported that Brookins had been notified the previous Friday to vacate the residence, suggesting that there had been prior familial conflicts.

However, until that moment, there were no formal reports of domestic violence recorded by the police.

The sheriff Chronister seized the incident to make an urgent call to those living in similar situations: "Domestic violence can escalate in an instant; if you or someone you know is in crisis, please seek help."
