Cuban customs agents participated in Russia in the Regional Competitions of the Federal Customs Service of Russia, where they secured second and third place in the canine detection technique contest for drugs.

"Well-deserved welcome to our young canine officer drivers who achieved 2nd and 3rd place in the drug detection competition in Russia. Congratulations and welcome back to the homeland, Claudia and Romny," wrote on X the vice chief of customs of Cuba.

The competition took place during the recently concluded week, and this Saturday the participants were welcomed by the Director General of Customs Processes and the head of the Cuban Customs at José Martí International Airport.

The participation of the regime, invited by the Federal Customs Service of Russia, highlights the strengthening of relations between the dictatorship in Havana and that of Moscow, as evidenced by the most recent meeting held in the Slavic country to fulfill a compliance agreement on airworthiness between the two allied nations.

It is also set within a context of intensified controls at airports, where joint operations have been implemented with the Ministry of the Interior to detect creative methods of drug trafficking.

Customs agents have intercepted several attempts at smuggling, including drugs hidden in diapers and electronic devices.

Years ago, the Federal Customs Service of Russia and the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba negotiated an agreement for cooperation in the fight against customs crimes.

On that occasion, the authorities emphasized that they would tackle customs offenses related to the transportation of goods by air.

Shortly thereafter, the Russians proposed the idea of opening a representative office of the Federal Customs Service in Cuba.

The acting head of that entity had commented that Moscow intended for the office in Cuba to also handle Russian interests in Nicaragua and Venezuela.
