The intense rains that hit Miami-Dade and Broward counties this Monday have caused a series of problems in South Florida, including urban flooding, chaos at airports, and a persistent threat of bad weather that will last for several days.

Authorities have issued flood warnings for the coming hours, and the forecast suggests that conditions may worsen with the formation of a tropical system.

Flash floods and alarming accumulations

On Monday afternoon, heavy rains struck South Florida, particularly in areas like West Kendall, where rainfall totals exceeded six inches.

"The hurricane season said 'Let the party begin'", can be read alongside a compilation of videos created by the Instagram profile Only in Dade.

At Miami International Airport (MIA), 4.43 inches were recorded, while Wynwood saw 3.63 inches, according to a report by Univisión.

The situation prompted the National Weather Service in Miami to issue a warning for this:

"One or two more rounds of heavy rain are expected today. Along with yesterday's rainfall, the likelihood of localized flash flooding is high enough to warrant a flood warning for the indicated areas."

The forecast for this June 3rd is between 2.5 and 7.5 cm on average, with accumulations of up to 15 cm in isolated areas.

Delays, cancellations, and chaos at the airports

The bad weather has severely impacted airport operations.

According to Telemundo 51, Miami International Airport initially reported 44 cancellations and 224 delays, a number that later increased to 94 flights canceled in a single day.

"This has been an odyssey... I came from Orlando, arriving here this morning with a layover from Orlando to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and more than 60 flights have been canceled, including mine," said one of the affected individuals in statements to the mentioned media outlet.

The situation generated scenes of frustration among the travelers.

The portal FlightAware also reported 143 delays at Fort Lauderdale Airport, although there was only one cancellation.

A weather system with tropical potential

The phenomenon behind the rainfall is a stationary front over Florida, which is creating a wide area of low pressure that draws moisture from the tropical Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

According to Fox Weather, this system could acquire tropical characteristics by the end of the week.

“This system could even develop some tropical characteristics by the end of the week, which led the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to highlight it as an area of interest off the southeastern coast of the United States,” emphasized Fox.

Although the forecasting models do not yet agree on the exact trajectory of the system, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach are expected to receive between 76 and 127 mm of rain by Friday.

The NOAA Weather Prediction Center issued a level 2 (out of 4) flash flood warning for this Tuesday.

According to statements collected by Fox, Michael Brennan, director of the NHC, warned:

"This is where we usually see storms forming in June, from the Gulf, through Florida, off the coasts of the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic... it serves as a good reminder that, generally, in June these storms tend to develop quite close to home."

More rain on the way

Meteorologists predict the arrival of more tropical moisture on Thursday, which will lead to new thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday.

This situation, while concerning, could also bring benefits by partially alleviating the drought conditions that Florida has been experiencing following the dry season.

The persistence of the system for at least 48 hours keeps local authorities and thousands of residents on alert, as they have already been affected by the heavy rainfall.

Recommendations for travelers and residents

South Florida is facing a challenging week in terms of weather. Monitoring the development of a potential tropical storm and the saturation of soils already affected by rainfall make preparation and caution essential.

In light of the ongoing bad weather, the authorities recommend:

-Consult with airlines before heading to the airports.

-Avoid flooded roads.

-Stay informed through official sources such as the National Meteorological Service and Local Emergency Centers.
