Noel Venero López, a 55-year-old Cuban who had been living in the United States for three years, was murdered on May 29 in the city of Houston, Texas, during what appears to be an attempted robbery.

While waiting at a red light, he was approached by a criminal who was fleeing after a series of accidents and the theft of a vehicle.

"He was waiting for his red light to go, and a crazy person, a drug addict, I don't know, a thief who had just stolen a car and crashed into about three cars, came up to where my husband was and tried to keep stealing. This cannot be forgiven, and I ask the authorities to file charges against him, to set aside bureaucracy and all kinds of delays with this case," said his wife, Milay Mora Vásquez, in statements to the Univision.

Rage, helplessness, and justice pending

The crime scene spanned three points along the service road of a highway, involving a vehicle collision, a shooting, and the theft of a car.

Thanks to that stolen vehicle, it was possible to identify and later arrest the suspected perpetrator in Corpus Christi: Alexis García, who is just 20 years old.

He is currently facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft, and illegal possession of a firearm.

He is currently detained in Nueces County, but his transfer to Harris County is expected.

Milay, however, denounces that he has not been charged with homicide, which he believes is warranted given the events that took place.

"What I want to convey is that so far I haven't seen anyone charged like the murderer; my husband is completely innocent. They know it, everyone knows it," she explained

"What are they waiting for to charge him with homicide? The most serious charge there is," she asks in desperation, urging that the full weight of the law be imposed on the murderer.

A loving father and a beloved man

Noel left behind two children: one who is 19 years old, living in Houston with Milay; and an older one, who is 30 years old, residing in Cuba.

I was planning a reunion in the Dominican Republic with the oldest one, whom I hadn't seen in three years.

From Cuba, the eldest son shared his pain: "I couldn't say goodbye to my dad."

He recounts that the last he heard from him was a missed call; when he tried to return it, it was too late. Shortly after, Milay called him to inform him about the murder.

Regarding the younger son, Milay confessed that although he does not express himself easily, the loss has been devastating: "The family is destroyed."

Before emigrating, Noel had worked at Transtur in Cuba. He was known for his friendly nature and dedication to his loved ones.

In the midst of her grief, the woman has expressed a final wish: "The day I die, I want my ashes to be mixed with those of my husband."

And he has even said: "I wish it had been me."

Milay Mora has opened a petition on the fundraising platform GoFundMe to give her husband "a dignified farewell." As of the closing of this report, $6,460 has been raised.
