A couple that made Cuban artistic gymnastics great and was, out of envy and malice, expelled from the sport on the island, has become the driving force and foundation upon which the successes of Panamanian gymnastics are built: Carlos Rafael Gil and Yareimi Vázquez tell a story WORTH TELLING.
It is an honor to converse again with these young people who know how to turn their dreams into beautiful realities. What happened in 2024?
2024 was a great year to conclude a significant Olympic cycle for Panamanian gymnastics, and for us, it was a period of consistent growth.
2024 has been the driving force for this new Olympic cycle, as we had already been working towards this four-year period since the end of last year. Everything achieved serves as motivation to move forward: the performances at the World Cup stops, the new element now registered with the International Federation, the Olympic participation of Hillary Herón, and the podium placements of the younger athletes at the continental level.
In fact, there is no longer time to think about that; all our thoughts and focus are on what lies ahead for this new cycle and the entire plan and projection to surpass what has been achieved by 2024. In summary, 2024 is the past that drives us into the future.
What does 2025 have in store for them?
As we mentioned, since the beginning of the year we have had a lot of work. Ambitious goals that include continuing to grow in all aspects of gymnast training.
What do you think about the Olympic Gala?
Hahaha. It took us by surprise; we had no idea something like this was happening. Practically, we were unaware of the nominations… it was something very beautiful and reassuring, as it is a recognition of all the work and effort put in, not only by us but also by all our gymnasts, the federation, the parents, our club NoLimits, and the support received from the Panama Olympic Committee.
This, of course, generates greater commitment to work and encourages us to explore all possibilities to continually improve and move forward.
Specifically, what awards did they receive?
Yareimi was chosen as the coach for the Olympic cycle; the team and the Panamanian Gymnastics Federation were the best of the four-year period.
Regarding the nominations, two of the three nominated athletes were our gymnasts, and I received the nomination for coach of the cycle.
What did Yareimi experience with that designation?
Julita, it was a great surprise for me; I was shocked when I heard my name. I didn't expect it. It holds great significance, as it is much more than recognition for the work done; it is the confirmation that everything happens for a reason in life, that when one door closes, others open, and it's because better things are coming our way. We just have to be willing not to give up and know that wanting is being able.
Beautiful and true words from this young coach, wife, mother, and daughter, who day by day transforms the girls she trains alongside her husband, Carlos Rafael, into champions and good people.
Upcoming competitions for Panamanian gymnastics in 2025
There are many competitions ahead, but we are currently focused on the Pan American Games, which will take place here in Panama very soon, from June 7 to 15. This event serves as a qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games. Following that, we have the World Cup, the Bolivarian Games, and the Youth Pan American Games, which will be hosted in Paraguay.
How are the girls coming along, the ones who will replace Hillary and Karla?
The little girls are doing very well; there is some very interesting work being done that will soon start to yield results. One of them even placed fourth on floor at a World Cup last month.
They come to reinforce the senior team. The youth teams are also developing very well, which makes us continue dreaming and planning big.
I just wish this successful pair, Hillary Heron, Karla Navas, Lana Herrera, and three young ladies joining the first team—Alyiah Lide, Tatiana Tapia, and Ana Gabriela Gutiérrez—continue to uphold and elevate the pedestal they have conquered, and that the younger ones—led by Ana Lucía Beitia—follow the example set by the older players.
Success!
