The robbery at a residence in Santiago de Cuba was captured by a security camera, serving as yet another witness to the wave of crime affecting Cubans.
“Early yesterday morning, around 3:27 AM, they forced the gate of a house in the Marialina neighborhood, in Santiago de Cuba. According to what I've been told, they took two of the three scales that were on the porch,” reported on Facebook the activist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who shared the video.
The thief "climbed up to force the gate and take down the balances from a second floor, but the other thief could not be recorded as he was outside the recording range," Mayeta specified.
The residents of the house told the activist that on other occasions they had attempted to steal, but without success.
"The thieves left a sharpened rebar at one of its ends at the scene, which was used to force the gate. However, the residents of the house point out that it could have been used by one of the wrongdoers as a means of defense and aggression, in case they had gone out to confront him," he added.
The victims of the robbery hope that the release of the video will pressure the police to take action on the matter.
The growing feeling of insecurity on the streets of Cuba has prompted the population to take direct action in the face of criminal acts, as shown by a recent incident in Santiago de Cuba, where this week a crowd captured an alleged thief on the busy Paseo de Martí in Santiago de Cuba.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Rise in Crime in Santiago de Cuba
Why has crime increased in Santiago de Cuba?
Crime in Santiago de Cuba has increased due to the economic crisis and the lack of effective action from the authorities. The population is facing growing despair that has led many to commit offenses, while police inefficiency has caused citizens to take justice into their own hands. This situation reflects a deterioration of order and law on the island, exacerbated by a shortage of resources and an adverse socioeconomic context.
How is the population of Santiago de Cuba responding to crime?
Residents of Santiago de Cuba are taking direct action to stop criminals. Faced with a sense of insecurity and police inaction, citizens have started to capture and detain thieves until authorities arrive. This response reflects a growing distrust in security institutions and an attempt to protect their communities at all costs.
What role do security cameras play in the fight against crime in Santiago de Cuba?
Security cameras have been crucial in documenting crimes and pressuring the police to take action. In a recent case of theft in Santiago de Cuba, a camera captured the crime, which facilitated the dissemination of the incident and increased public pressure for the authorities to take measures. These devices are helping to create a visual record of crime, although they do not always guarantee a swift response from the authorities.
What consequences does the population face when taking justice into their own hands?
By taking justice into their own hands, citizens expose themselves to violent situations and possible reprisals. The growing trend among residents of Santiago de Cuba to personally intervene in crime reflects their frustration and lack of protection, but it also entails significant risks. The absence of an efficient justice system forces citizens to act as judges and enforcers, which can escalate into violence and have legal consequences for those involved in these actions.
