A 39-year-old Cuban, with a criminal record and illegal status in Italy, was arrested in the city of Milan, accused of being an accomplice in the robbery of a German tourist on Saturday morning.
The robbery was reported just before noon, when an individual approached a 43-year-old tourist, who was having breakfast on the terrace of a café in Piazza De Lellis, near the Central Station, snatched their bag, and fled running, as reported by Milano Today.
The German citizen chased the thief and saw him get into a Fiat 500, whose driver was waiting for him with the engine running.
In an attempt to prevent the escape, the tourist grabbed hold of the right door handle, but the car took off and dragged him down the street for several meters. As a result, he suffered abrasions and had to be treated in the emergency room of the Fatebenefratelli hospital, reported the news portal Unita.tv.
Meanwhile, a driver from a car rental service who witnessed the scene decided to follow the Fiat. On Via Vittorio Veneto, he encountered a patrol from the Garibaldi Venezia police station and alerted the officers about the car the thieves were fleeing in.
The officers intercepted the car, but onboard they only found the Cuban, who was arrested for conspiracy to commit theft. The perpetrator of the crime fled on foot towards the Bastioni gardens and is being sought by the police, according to press reports.
The stolen bag was in the vehicle, and the authorities returned it to its owner.
