The chargé d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba Mike Hammer visited the municipalities of San Antonio de los Baños and Artemisa, where he met with "everyday Cubans."
"I had the opportunity to meet people who had recognized me through social media and who had previously contacted us via Facebook. These were pleasant and valuable encounters that reaffirm the importance I place on connecting directly with people," Hammer said in an off video that the Embassy usually creates to document these trips that annoy the Cuban regime so much.
In the footage, the diplomat was seen engaging with Cubans on the streets of these towns and at a meeting with young people in a Catholic church. "During the visit, I had a very good exchange with young people full of energy and commitment, who undoubtedly represent the future of Cuba," he said.
"The country is very beautiful, but what I enjoy the most is sharing, and I would like to hear from you anything you want to share, including criticisms, please, as I come from a democracy. It is not perfect; we have our problems, but the interests of opinion and thought are respected," Hammer said in his meeting with the youth.
As he usually does during his tours of the Island, Hammer visited a square dedicated to José Martí and ended the video with a quote from the Apostle: “To do is the best way to say.”
While Cubans continue to demand real solutions to their everyday problems, Mike Hammer, with his presence in the streets, in churches, and among the people, represents a diplomacy that is not afraid to listen, that values mutual respect, and that, through actions, shows it is closer to the Cuban people than the regime's own officials.
Recently, in yet another of its most ridiculous and propagandistic acts, the Cuban regime officially honored the state official who was involved in a crude harassment operation against the head of the U.S. diplomatic mission.
The setup was as clumsy as it was pathetic: a "common citizen" --the now-honored Castro Toledo-- approached the diplomat with an aggressive attitude to "tell him the truths," while another recorded everything with a cellphone and regime agents pretended to be spontaneous passengers.
The attempt to turn the scene into an "act of repudiation" failed completely. None of those present joined in on the spectacle. Despite the effort, the propagandistic theater was laid bare by its artificiality.
While the regime applauds the circus, Ambassador Hammer responded with class.
In a video posted by the United States Embassy, he calmly recounted the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots diplomacy rather than office-based diplomacy. “That’s what I want to do: travel across the country, listen to different opinions from the Cuban people, and share with them,” he said.
Her response, firm and free of confrontation, defused the attempt at provocation with a lesson in composure and authenticity.
