The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a stern warning to U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, following his recent threats regarding military intervention.
In a message broadcast by Iranian state television, Jamenei asserted that the Persian nation "will not surrender" and that any attack by the United States would have "serious and irreparable consequences."
The response from the Iranian leader comes after Trump publicly stated that he knew the whereabouts of Jamenei and that Washington's patience was "running out," demanding an "unconditional surrender" from Tehran.
Jamenei responded that Iran will not accept either an imposed war or a dictated peace. He also warned that Israel "made a huge mistake" by attacking its territory and promised retaliation.
The conflict has escalated rapidly. This Wednesday marks the sixth consecutive day of Israeli attacks on Iranian territory.
According to Iranian state media, cited by El Diario, Israeli military aircraft have bombed Payam International Airport and several buildings of the Ministry of Defense in Tehran. The explosions have also affected residential areas and the building of the Red Crescent, where severe damage was observed.
The official death toll in Iran has now reached 224, although unofficial reports place that number above 230. In response, Iran has intensified its attacks against Israel. A new barrage of missiles launched on Wednesday has resulted in at least 23 deaths in various locations, including Tel Aviv.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for an “immediate de-escalation” of the conflict and warned that further international involvement would have devastating consequences for the region and global peace.
In that context, Trump has left open the possibility of a U.S. military attack, without confirming whether he will take that step: “Maybe I will. Maybe I won’t,” he stated to the press.
