The chief of the Miami Police Department, Manny Morales, announced the suspension of four officers from the force as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct.

The agents have been relieved of their duties and are currently suspended with pay.

In statements to Telemundo 51, Morales asserted that the involved officers "made the decision to betray the badge" and that "they were not acting according to the guidelines and policies and procedures of the Miami Police Department."

Although he did not disclose the names, ranks, or the alleged offense of those involved, he maintained that the investigation remains open and ongoing.

"It is my duty to uphold the integrity of this department, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that the community understands that each member of the Police Department must act with the utmost integrity," emphasized Morales.

A source consulted by Telemundo 51 indicated that it would involve a sergeant, a lieutenant, and two officers.

The same source linked the investigation to the case of Francisco Melo, a deputy with the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office, who was arrested in January as he was about to board a cruise with 60 ecstasy pills hidden in his luggage.

However, Morales did not confirm that the suspension of the four police officers is directly linked to that case.

"At this moment, I cannot verify what connections are in place. But we are working with our state and federal partners to assure the public that this department maintains its integrity," he stated.

In statements to Local 10 News, he stated that for now he would not disclose the names, ranks, or positions of those involved.

The police chief also declined to comment on the specific nature of the investigation, although he emphasized that the actions of other members of the department were crucial in initiating the internal inquiries.

"The members of the Miami Police Department who knew that it was necessary to do the right thing came forward and identified those members of the Miami Police Department who were not doing the right thing," he stated.

In a statement, Morales reaffirmed his stance of zero tolerance regarding inappropriate behavior within the institution: "While we are limited in what we can disclose due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, one thing is clear: unethical behavior has no place in our ranks."

Furthermore, he made it clear that if the investigation leads to criminal charges against any of the officers, they will face the appropriate consequences: any officer who commits a crime will be subjected to "the full force of the law."

The investigation is ongoing, and so far, no formal charges have been filed, nor has the full scope of the case been disclosed.
