The driver responsible for the accident that occurred on the night of this Friday when a truck struck several pedestrians in Pinar del Río was arrested this Saturday.

According to the official profile of Oscar Ramírez Pinar, the driver of the truck responsible for the traffic accident that resulted in four fatalities in the area of kilometer two on the road to Luis Lazo is detained under investigation.

The news, shared also by the first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the PCC, mentions that the man left the scene after the accident and had not been located.

According to the local outlet Guamá, the incident occurred at 9:15 p.m. at kilometer two of the Luis Lazo road in Pinar del Río, when the driver of the truck lost control on the road and struck a group of people who were on the sidewalk in front of a house.

Among the deceased are 9-year-old Miliany Pérez Javier and 24-year-old pregnant Anairis Sánchez Blanco, the media reported.

The other deceased individuals are: Aliomar A. Sotolongo Alcina, 21 years old, and Deisy Javier Pérez, 53 years old.

Additionally, other individuals were injured, including 10-year-old Marlenis Martínez Blanco, who is reported to be in critical condition.

Of the other injured individuals, one was in critical condition and has already undergone surgery, while the other was reported to be in stable condition, out of immediate danger.

The injured were taken to Abel Santamaría Cuadrado hospital, and in the case of the girl, to the Pepe Portilla pediatric hospital.

Although the year 2025 started with a reduction in the number of traffic accidents in Cuba compared to January of the previous year, the number of fatalities increased.

At the end of January, there were 87 fewer accidents (422) and two fewer injuries (552) compared to the same period in 2024.

However, the number of fatalities increased, reaching 65 deaths, six more than in 2024.
