A Hialeah police officer and the driver of a black Cadillac were hospitalized early Friday morning following a violent car accident that occurred in front of a school, at an intersection known for its danger.

The collision occurred around 12:45 am at the intersection of East 4 Avenue and 18 Street, right in front of a Lincoln Martí school.

According to the authorities, the driver of the Cadillac, who was traveling westbound on East 18th Street, failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a police patrol car.

"The Cadillac did not stop at the stop sign and collided with our police unit," confirmed Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodríguez to Telemundo 51.

Both drivers were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with injuries. So far, there has been no information about the severity of their wounds.

Images captured at the scene showed the Cadillac SUV with its windshield completely shattered and the airbags deployed. Meanwhile, the police patrol sustained visible damage to the hood.

The impact was so strong that it knocked down a fence in front of the school and a light pole that ended up on the sidewalk.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion.

Residents of the area stated that they were not surprised by what occurred. They mentioned that accidents at that intersection are frequent and often caused by speeding.

"This corner is dangerous. People turn at full speed. Measures should be taken before a greater tragedy occurs," warned a neighbor.

The incident brings back the debate about the urgent need to improve signage and strengthen traffic control in that sector of Hialeah, especially during low-traffic hours when, paradoxically, reckless driving tends to increase.
