The Republican congressman Carlos Giménez will tour the Krome detention center in Miami-Dade County next Monday.
This is another oversight visit following the criticism regarding the treatment of detained migrants in federal facilities in South Florida, reported Local 10, which obtained a statement from the congressman's office.
The Cuban-American politician will exercise his right to conduct "a fact-finding mission" at the facilities of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), located at 18201 SW 12th St
After the tour, Giménez will hold a press conference to share his impressions.
Since March, the Krome Detention Center, also in South Florida, has faced multiple complaints.
On June 5th, migrants at the Krome Detention Center, also in South Florida, used sheets to form an SOS visible from the air.
In May, Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz visited that facility and reported that there were between 25 and 35 men in a very cramped space.
Last week, Giménez visited the Federal Detention Center in Downtown Miami, following reports of inadequate conditions and mistreatment of those detained.
The visit of Giménez, which lasted more than an hour and a half, aimed to personally verify the situation within the center, where hundreds of immigrants remain in civil custody.
The legislator denied having seen anything that indicated, in any way, that they are being mistreated.
Giménez clarified that the prisoners have food, water, exercise machines, and can use computers and phones. In addition, they have access to their embassies, consulates, and lawyers.
"I saw a prison that is well organized and has adequate conditions," he noted.
"It is not inhumane. And there is nothing there that would make me feel, as an American, that I am not proud to be American and ashamed of what is happening there," he emphasized.
