Almost five years after a violent accident that claimed the life of a woman in Miami Gardens, authorities arrested Malcolm Antonio Lumpkin, who has been charged with vehicular homicide.

The arrested individual was 19 years old when he collided head-on with the vehicle of Renee Symonette, 49, on the night of October 7, 2020.

According to the city's Police Department, the victim was attempting to turn left at the intersection of Northwest 179th Street and 37th Avenue when they were struck by the 2016 Nissan Maxima driven by the young man.

According to the arrest warrant issued last March, Lumpkin was driving recklessly at nearly 90 miles per hour (mph) in a zone with a limit of 35.

He ran a red light at Northwest 183rd Street, weaving around two vehicles at high speed and continued to change lanes erratically until he collided with Symonette's Mercedes-Benz.

The woman died on the spot and her companion was injured.

Data from the vehicle's registrar revealed that Lumpkin was traveling at 91 mph just one second before the impact and applied the brakes slightly half a second before the final collision, which occurred at 89 mph.

After the fatal collision, he left the vehicle and left the scene.

The young man, who is now 24 years old, is facing a charge of reckless vehicular homicide.

According to the report from Local 10, this is not his first encounter with the law in a case involving a fatality.

In 2015, at just 14 years old, he was arrested for the alleged involuntary manslaughter of 15-year-old Jakyri Fleurimar during a shooting at a house in the northwest part of Miami-Dade County. However, it is unclear how that juvenile case concluded.

The current arrest took place last Monday when a detective from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office identified him driving another Nissan Maxima—this time a 2019 model—with the license plate partially covered illegally. When the officer attempted to stop him, Lumpkin fled in the vehicle.

The chase was just a few blocks ahead, after the suspect crashed and tried to escape on foot. He was captured shortly after by the authorities.

In addition to the charge of vehicular homicide, Lumpkin faces charges for fleeing and evading police, and for resisting arrest without violence.

He remains detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bail set at over $250,000.
