Ridiculous on social media: Gerardo Hernández spreads fake news about the deportation of a Cuban in the U.S.

The former spy not only repeated the lie, but also added a mocking tone, suggesting that deportation is some sort of punishment for supporting Donald Trump.

The former Cuban spy and current head of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, was at the center of a new episode of disinformation on social media by posting a crude lie that has sparked outrage among journalists, artists, and internet users.

Hernández wrote on his X account: "This is how she sang during Donald Trump's campaign, and now...", accompanying the message with a montage that combines two unrelated moments.

First, a video of the group "Los 3 de La Habana" performing their well-known song in support of Donald Trump is shown. Next, a young Cuban woman appears, weeping inconsolably following the arrest of her husband by ICE agents in Miami.

The publication claims, without any evidence or verification: "Cuban singer Janet Correa, who participated in the campaign for Donald Trump, had her husband deported yesterday, and this was her reaction."

But the claim is completely false. The woman appearing in tears in the video is not Ana Páez, vocalist of the pro-Trump group, but Janet Correa, a legal resident from Cuba in the United States, whose husband was arrested in May.

Hernández's confusion seems to have originated from a post by the user "SVCNoticias," which mixed images without confirming the identity of the protagonists.

Gerardo not only repeated the lie but also added a mocking tone, suggesting that the deportation was a kind of punishment for supporting the American president.

Journalist Mario J. Pentón was one of the first to dismantle the falsehood.

"The spy Gerardo Hernández, head of the Surveillance Committees of the Cuban dictatorship, shares a fake news item claiming that they have deported the husband of the singer from Los Tres de La Habana. 'They have nothing else to fabricate. The Cuban dictatorship is in a state of desperation,' singer Ana María Páez told me in a brief phone conversation."

The filmmaker Ian Padrón also reacted strongly.

"Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, don't be so deceitful and at least do a minimal search: The tremendous Cuban singer Ana Páez (Los 3 de La Habana) is the one who sings that song (which you included in your post). Anita is smiling in Miami," he wrote.

The manipulation is doubly severe because it exploits the real pain of a woman, Janet Correa, whose sadness moved thousands when her partner was detained during a migration appointment.

"That is an injustice, a great injustice," Correa cried, tears streaming down her face at that moment. Her husband, who has no criminal record and has been a hardworking individual since arriving in the United States, was arrested after a judge rejected his case. Her attorney criticized ICE's swift execution of the detention order and announced legal actions to halt the deportation.

The use of his image without consent or accuracy adds a new stain to the propagandistic history of Hernández Nordelo, who didn't even bother to verify identities before spreading a rumor that aligned with his ideological agenda.

While Los 3 de La Habana remain active and cheerful in Miami -and are a musical reference for a segment of the conservative Cuban exile- he is exposed as what everyone knows: just another functionary of misinformation, who resorts to deception as a political weapon.
