A man was shot and injured in a shooting that occurred early Thursday morning in front of the UPS facility located at 6001 East Eighth Avenue in Hialeah.
The police confirmed that several individuals were detained for questioning, although no formal arrests have been announced so far.
The shooting was reported around 3:20 a.m.
When the officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim hidden in the parking lot of the location, with at least one gunshot wound.
The man received medical assistance from firefighting and rescue units in Hialeah and was later transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His health status has not been publicly disclosed.
The officials arrested several individuals who were allegedly trying to flee the area near East Eighth Avenue and 56th Street. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those arrested or their possible connection to the incident.
A man who identified himself as a close friend of the injured confirmed that he works at UPS.
According to the testimony from that source to Local 10, his friend called him asking for help before the shooting occurred. "He told me to come because someone was trying to rush at him. So I came," he stated.
But upon arrival, the police had already cordoned off the area and he couldn't communicate with him. "When I asked [the officers] what was happening, they wouldn't tell me," he recounted with concern.
"He was working alone. He probably saw a group of people trying to jump on him and likely stood his ground. Anyone would have held firm," he clarified to CBS News.
Another witness, a woman who was at the location to pick someone up, reported hearing gunshots and was held by the police along with her passenger during the preliminary investigation. They were later released.
For its part, UPS issued a statement confirming that it is aware of the situation that took place outside its Hialeah facilities and noted that there is an active police investigation.
"However, UPS operations have not been affected," the text emphasizes.
Authorities have not disclosed what initiated the shooting, whether it was a premeditated attack or a spontaneous altercation, or if it had any connection to UPS operations.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the Hialeah Police are expected to provide more details in the coming hours.
