The Cuban actor Alejandro Cuervo discussed his acting career and his business ventures in Cuba during an interview with the program Destino Tolk, a topic that has been the subject of much scrutiny among the Cuban public.

In the conversation, Fernan, one of the presenters, asked directly: “Can you move forward in Cuba? Can you thrive in Cuba?” The interpreter responded: “It’s very difficult, but yes, it is possible.”

The artist explained that thriving is not an exclusive challenge for Cubans. “It’s difficult in Cuba, it’s difficult in Spain where I have been, it’s difficult in Italy where I have been, it’s difficult in Mexico, it’s difficult in Cancún, it’s difficult in Panama,” he said, adding that he has friends in all those countries “who in fact were often better off in Cuba than where they are now.”

Cuervo referred to the grave situation on the island. “Cuba is going through a terrible situation; outside of Havana, there is no electricity. My family lives in the countryside, and I experience this daily. What is happening is terrible along with all Cubans,” he asserted.

According to the actor, the current energy situation is even worse than the so-called Special Period of the 90s: "I remember as a child the Special Period, I believe what is happening with the energy issue in Cuba is worse."

Despite this scenario, Alejandro argues that with effort and discipline, one can make progress. For him, the key is to save money, save, and then invest. Many Cubans, according to him, when they have more money, tend to spend and waste it instead of thinking about the future: "Human beings believe that when we have a good economic moment, it will be eternal."

Alejandro assures that thanks to his savings, he was able to build his house in Havana and "solve" as they say in good Cuban. “The government hasn’t helped me; people have helped me,” he expressed, alluding to the fact that his popularity has been key in opening doors. “People like me; I have earned their affection little by little with my attitude and my work,” he stated.

He also highlighted the role of social media in allowing the public to connect with their artists: “In this age of social media, the audience has the opportunity to get to know their artists better.”

The actor recounted that for years he sacrificed himself by working tirelessly in nightclubs because that was where he earned much more than as an actor, but his ultimate goal was always to continue growing financially, even to the detriment of more basic needs.

Regarding the ever-present comments about her alleged ties to the Cuban regime, she clarified that everything she has achieved is due to her own effort and sacrifice.

The actor's statements have once again sparked many criticisms among Cubans whose realities on the island differ greatly from his personal experience.

The interview with Destino Tolk arrives amid a growing controversy following his trip to the United States, which has sparked divided opinions among the Cuban exile community in Miami.
