Twelve-year-old Manuel, a resident of the city of Manzanillo, is recovering satisfactorily at home after being the victim of a serious traffic accident that occurred on the afternoon of June 5th.
While riding his bicycle in the neighborhood, he was hit by a motorcycle, resulting in serious injuries, according to his mother, who received the alarming call from the Hermanos Cordové Children's Hospital.
Manuel suffered a severe cranial trauma with frontoparietal fracture and exposure of brain tissue, and although he arrived at the hospital conscious, his condition rapidly deteriorated.
His neurological and respiratory systems began to fail, requiring mechanical ventilation. This prevented his urgent transfer to Bayamo, where the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial General Hospital is located.
In a crucial decision, surgeon José Ángel Patiño Matamoros traveled from the city of Bayamo to Manzanillo to perform an emergency surgical procedure, the first of its kind at Hermanos Cordové. The complex operation lasted six hours and was successful.
"It was an extremely complex situation, with exposure of bone fragments and brain matter; the dura mater was completely torn, with no defined edges," explained Dr. Patiño Matamoros to the telecenter CNCTV.
"This case was specific, unique, special, because neither the operating room nor the intensive care unit had experience in this type of management. It was a lesson for everyone," he emphasized.
Thanks to the swift action of the medical team and the joint effort of the healthcare staff, Manuel is now stable and recovering at home with his family.
