A Cuban resident in Florida had an unusual encounter when a crocodile unexpectedly emerged from the water to try to snatch his catch of the day.
The incident, captured on video and shared on the profile of Facebook "Cubanos EnelmundoTv", has caused a stir both for the scare it provided and for the humor with which many have reacted.
The fisherman, whose identity has not been revealed, was in a coastal area of southern Florida, a state known for its abundant population of crocodiles and sharks.
As he was packing up his gear and the freshly caught fish, a huge crocodile stealthily approached, surprising the man and launching itself at the cooler — "tanqueta" — where he kept the fish.
The images show the reptile clinging to the armored vehicle and dragging it toward the water.
"Definitely, this must be a crocodile that emigrated from Pinar del Río," joked a user on social media, comparing the animal's opportunistic behavior to the typical characters of Cuban folk culture.
"Surely he has a paint, ice, or ice pops business," added another with irony.
Although the incident did not result in any injuries, many recalled that the residents of the state must adapt to living so close to the wildlife, which is inhabited by alligators, snakes, and other animals.
According to data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, hundreds of encounters between humans and alligators are reported each year, especially during warm seasons when these animals become more active.
Frequently Asked Questions about Encounters with Crocodiles and Alligators in Florida
Why are encounters with alligators frequent in Florida?
Florida is one of the states with the highest presence of crocodiles and alligators in urban areas due to its geography of lakes, canals, and swampy regions. These reptiles can be seen in both protected natural areas and urban environments, searching for food or mates during the warm seasons.
What safety measures should be taken to prevent crocodile attacks?
To minimize the risk of dangerous encounters with crocodiles, it is recommended to maintain a safe distance, avoid swimming outside designated areas, not to feed them, and keep pets away from the water's edge. It is also essential to report their presence to wildlife services if they pose a danger.
How should I react if I encounter a crocodile on land?
If you encounter a crocodile on land, the most important thing is to quickly move away in a straight line. Contrary to popular myth, running in a zigzag is not necessary. Crocodiles can reach speeds of 11 to 15 kilometers per hour on land, so it’s crucial to react quickly.
What to do if a crocodile tries to steal your catch?
The best approach is to stay away and let the crocodile take the catch. Do not attempt to confront it or retrieve the fish, as these animals can be very aggressive when searching for food. It is always better to prioritize your safety over the fishing catch.
