The Cuban-American congresswoman María Elvira Salazar reaffirmed her commitment to the freedom of Cuba this Wednesday, just days ahead of the anniversary of July 11, when thousands of Cubans took to the streets in 2021 to demand a change in the system.

“Thank you, Secretary Rubio, for standing firm with the Cuban people and for reaffirming, once again, our unwavering commitment to their freedom,” he wrote on Facebook.

"Just days before the anniversary of July 11, the United States makes it clear to the regime: we will never turn our backs on the Cuban people. The struggle for a free, sovereign, and democratic Cuba remains alive. And we will not rest until we see it become a reality," he added.

His message is a direct response to Marco Rubio's participation, via the Internet, in a recent meeting with dissidents, independent journalists, and families of political prisoners in Havana, held at the residence of the United States Chargé d'Affaires, Mike Hammer.

In that event, Rubio sent a recorded message in which he stated: “11J marked a turning point. It was an inspiration for all of us who love freedom and dream of a free, sovereign, and independent Cuba.”

The gesture of both Cuban-Americans reinforces institutional support from Washington for the cause of freedom on the island, in a context of increasing repression by the regime against internal dissent, even on symbolic dates like the anniversary of the 11J protests.

"I know it’s not easy to live on that enslaved Island and to face a regime that does everything possible to punish you. But you do not give up, and that inspires us," he said in the recording.
