Leonar Michel López Mora, a young Cuban just 20 years old, was murdered last weekend in a violent incident that has shaken the community of Puerto Padre, in the province of Las Tunas.
The crime occurred in Playa La Boca, during the official activities for the summer inauguration, sponsored by TRD Caribe and in the presence of provincial authorities.
While the festive day unfolded, marked by speeches and music, Leonar Michel's life was extinguished after being stabbed in the back.
According to testimonies on social media, the alleged attacker, whose identity has not yet been revealed, is said to have escaped from the scene and has not been captured so far.
Leonar leaves behind a pregnant wife, according to his friends, which adds a heartbreaking dimension to this tragedy.
“My friend, my brother, today I dare to say goodbye to you… Thank you for always taking care of me and defending me like a sister. I can only ask God to take care of you and give health to your wife and that little one growing in her womb,” wrote his friend Rosy Silva Romero, accompanying the message with images alongside him.
In another post, a user shared the last photo of Leonar before his death, taken during the same event where he was attacked: “Start of summer with my loved ones. A thousand blessings”, he wrote himself just hours before his death. The image, in which he is smiling with his friends, stands in stark contrast to the tragic outcome that would take his life just minutes later.
Another young man injured and the silence of the State
In the same incident, another young man was seriously injured with a stab wound to the back. An image shared on social media shows the marks of the surgical intervention. Fortunately, this second boy has already been discharged and is recovering at home, according to the page "Díaz-Canel Sin Gao."
However, no Cuban authority or official media has mentioned the crime, despite it occurring at a public event sponsored by the State. This institutional silence has ignited social media, where the hashtag #JusticiaParaLeonarMichel has begun to circulate widely as a symbol of citizen demand.
Settling scores or crime out of jealousy?
Unofficial reports suggest that the attack was carried out by a collector from a power plant, in what some describe as a suspected "settling of scores." Others claim that the assailant was a former convict who acted out of envy towards Leonar, whom they describe as a trouble-free, hardworking, and respected young man.
"The one who killed him is an inmate who was envious of him," a user reported on Facebook, also noting that the crime occurred just one hour after Leonar shared the photo celebrating summer with his friends.
The truth is that this murder adds to the wave of violence that is shaking the country, which is not a hidden phenomenon, especially among the youth, and to the official indifference towards events that grieve entire communities.
In Contramaestre, Santiago de Cuba, at the end of June, Roger Vargas Cárdenas, 19 years old, was fatally stabbed in front of the ETECSA office while returning from a party. Three teenagers attacked him to steal his girlfriend's cell phone.
While in Havana, also in the last days of the sixth month of the year, babalawo Carlos César Vive, originally from Santiago de Cuba, was murdered in broad daylight after receiving at least three stab wounds. The motives behind the crime have not yet been clarified, and there is speculation about possible disputes with members of a religious society.
