Widow of Cuban Edieski Piñeiro, murdered at the doorstep of his home, speaks ahead of key hearing in Houston

Just hours before the alleged murderer of Edieski Inocencio Piñeiro appears before the Harris County Court in Houston, the widow of the young Cuban, Raiza Sosa, broke her silence and shared the ordeal her family has been living since that fateful April 27, when her husband was coldly murdered in front of their home.

Piñeiro, originally from Manzanillo, Cuba, was shot inside his home in the Alief area, southwest of Houston. The accused, Andrés Fernández de la Paz, the victim's ex-brother-in-law, has been charged with the crime and is facing murder charges.

The prosecution claims that Fernández arrived armed at the house, fired through the door, and fled the scene, all recorded on video.

Since then, the family of the deceased, both in Houston and on the island, has been trying to cope with the pain of an unexpected and violent loss.

In statements to Telemundo Houston, the widow asserted that, although it has been difficult to attend the court hearings, she has no intention of giving up: “I will keep fighting until justice is served,” she stated.

The case has generated shock within the Cuban community in the U.S., not only due to the brutality of the crime but also because of the devastating impact on a migrant family that was just beginning a new life.

Piñeiro, 34 years old, was a hardworking man who had recently arrived from Cuba and financially supported his loved ones on both sides of the Florida Strait.

A history that aggravates the case

Fernández was the husband, for at least a year, of a sister of Piñeiro. According to statements from acquaintances, the relationship between them was tense and marked by episodes of threats, as the suspect had claimed he would kill his ex-wife, her family, and then flee to Mexico.

The accused was arrested on April 28, one day after the crime, and remains detained with a bail of $500,000.

In the most recent hearing, Judge Verónica Nelson denied a request to reduce it to 15,000, after the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including previous threats and the defendant's own intention to flee to Mexico.

In addition to the charge of murder, Fernández has a criminal record for fraud and organized crime in other counties. Police sources revealed to Click 2 Houston that Fernández has been under FBI investigation since 2022 for leading a card cloning operation in Texas.

The Cuban was arrested in 2023 for placing devices at gas stations and was also linked to fraudulent purchases with stolen cards, although he was released on bail.

Additionally, he had already faced a murder charge in 2016, which was dismissed due to doubts about authorship and an alleged self-defense claim.

His immigration history also complicates the case. He entered the U.S. in 2014 with a temporary parole that expired without him leaving the country, and he has multiple immigration detention orders issued by ICE following previous arrests.

The Piñeiro family has been firm in their public demand for justice. They insist that the accused should not be granted bail and that he should face the maximum penalty.

“Edieski's life cannot go unpunished”, said his widow, who, despite the pain, remains steadfast in her commitment to honor the memory of the man with whom she had built a family and migration project.
