The Cuban reggaeton artist Leamsy Izquierdo, known professionally as La Figura, has once again raised his voice from the detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz, to denounce the inhumane conditions in which migrants are held in that place.
In a phone call granted to Univisión, Izquierdo warned that the center currently has two tents, each with a capacity for 250 people.
She added that the authorities are setting up a third tent with the supposed aim of hiding some migrants during the visit of Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, who has demanded access to the site.
Serious health complaints and death of an inmate
During the call, Izquierdo and other detainees shared testimonies about the medical shortages within the center.
One of the Cubans held there recounted the death of a 35-year-old Russian migrant, who allegedly died after receiving a medication to which he was allergic.
Other inmates expressed that they suffer from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and psychiatric disorders, and that they are not receiving their medications.
The situation has created a climate of desperation among the detainees.
"They have us kidnapped."
Izquierdo also reported that lawyers are not allowed entry, and stated:
"They have us here kidnapped. We are not listed in any system. We are in an inhumane situation."
Another Cuban migrant, in a desperate testimony, stated that everyone is "on the brink of madness" and that the living conditions are unsuitable
"This seems like a claw of Castroism. There are no conditions to live here. We need help."
The migrants' plea is unanimous. They are asking for their cases to be processed under different conditions and for some authority to intervene immediately to assess what is happening in this detention center.
“We urge someone to intervene, because we don't know what to do”, concluded one of the most dramatic testimonies.
