Residents of Miami-Dade County can now renew their vehicle registration quickly and without the need to visit a government office, thanks to the implementation of self-service kiosks at five Publix supermarkets in South Florida.
The Miami-Dade Tax Collector's Office, in partnership with Florida MV Express, announced that these devices allow for the renewal of vehicle registration, instant printing of the license plate sticker, and receipt issuance, all in under two minutes.
The program is part of an effort to modernize public services and bring them closer to the everyday lives of citizens.
Where are the kiosks located?
The kiosks were installed in five Publix locations in high-traffic areas, chosen for their accessibility and their role in the daily routine of many drivers:
15771 SW 152nd Street, Miami
20201 SW 127th Avenue, Miami
1920 West Avenue, Miami Beach
7550 NW 104th Avenue, Doral
891 N. Homestead Boulevard, Homestead
What do you need to renew?
To use the kiosks, drivers must have:
The PIN number from the renewal notice (received by mail) or the vehicle's license plate number
The date of birth of the primary owner
A credit or debit card (some locations accept cash)
After following the system instructions, the user will be able to print the sticker for the new registration, the renewal receipt, and the payment receipt.
What vehicles qualify?
This service may be used by those who need to renew vehicle registrations that:
No new plate is required
They do not have suspensions due to lack of insurance, suspended license, or unpaid tolls
They do not require the Florida Insurance Certificate
They do not need to submit IRS Form 2290 (for heavy vehicles)
In contrast, the following cases are not eligible for renewal through the kiosk:
Autonomous vehicles
Vessels
Government vehicles
Mobile homes
Custom plates or those of the National Guard
IRP Records
Posters or special parking permits
How much does it cost?
The use of the kiosk incurs a convenience fee of $4.50 per transaction, plus a processing charge of 2.3% if paid by card.
These fees do not include the renewal cost and are collected exclusively by Florida MV Express. The tax collector's office does not receive any revenue from these charges.
However, authorities assert that this option is usually more cost-effective than processing the procedure online or in person, and significantly quicker.
When can it be renewed?
The registration can be renewed from 90 days before the expiration date and up to eight months afterward, although it is noted that in case of a delay, late payment fees may apply.
A more accessible government
Dariel Fernández, the county tax collector, explained that this measure responds to the need to bring services closer to the community:
"Our responsibility is to make the government more accessible, efficient, and responsive to the needs of our residents. With these kiosks, we eliminate barriers and give time back to the citizens."
Fernández emphasized that Publix supermarkets were chosen as strategic partners for the project because they are spaces frequented daily by thousands of people.
He also emphasized that the county offices remain operational to assist those who prefer a traditional approach or are not familiar with technology.
"People who are not as comfortable with technology are still being assisted in person; they can come in and we explain it to them," he said.
What if there are problems?
In case of technical failures or difficulties while using the kiosks, users can contact Florida MV Express customer service by calling 1-833-939-1572.
