An iridescence phenomenon was visible this Tuesday in the sky of Matanzas, where the colors of the solar spectrum appeared among the clouds, astonishing residents and capturing attention on social media.
According to meteorologist Henry Delgado Manzor on his Facebook profile, the phenomenon occurred due to the interaction between sunlight and a specific type of clouds known as Cirrocumulus, which are found more than six kilometers above the ground.
These clouds are made up of ice crystals, which, when they scatter light, create reflections of multiple colors, similar to those of a rainbow, though on a smaller scale and in a more irregular shape.
"The presence of the sun and Cirrocumulus clouds, made up of ice crystals at high altitudes, are the reasons for this beautiful visual phenomenon that could be observed in the sky of Matanzas," Delgado detailed in the post.
"It is comforting to be able to appreciate those weather phenomena and feel connected to the world around us. Thank you for sharing such a positive appreciation," noted the specialist in the comments section.
Several internet users reacted with astonishment to the image that accompanies the post.
“Such beauty, thank you for sharing,” wrote Bárbara Rivera.
Mila Marcos remarked, "When we think we've seen it all, Henry always shows up with his camera to remind us that there is still so much more to see."
“¡¡¡¡WHAT A BEAUTY!!!! Nature always surprises us. Natural beauty,” expressed Mejías Teresa del Carmen.
For Sonia Camacho Lauzurique, it was an emotional experience: “For me, it is a blessing to enjoy these images. Thank you, Henry.”
Nature has recently left truly striking scenes in various areas of Cuba. In Artemisa, a tornado surprised the residents of Güira de Melena with a force that tore off roofs, toppled trees, and tossed debris into the air, leaving a mix of amazement and concern in its wake.
Something similar, although of completely different origin, occurred in the Ciénaga de Zapata, where a massive invasion of crabs forced families to close doors and windows for protection, while dozens of these creatures climbed walls and filled patios and kitchens.
These manifestations are accompanied by a phenomenon that primarily affects the coasts: the massive arrival of sargassum, which has forced alerts to be issued in various provinces due to its impact on the marine ecosystem and local tourism.
Frequently Asked Questions about Iridescence in the Sky of Matanzas
What is the phenomenon of iridescence in the sky?
Iridescence is an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight interacts with clouds made up of ice crystals, such as Cirrocumulus. This interaction disperses the light and creates reflections of multiple colors similar to those found in a rainbow.
Why was iridescence observed in the sky over Matanzas?
La iridiscencia fue visible en el cielo de Matanzas debido a la presencia de nubes Cirrocumulus a gran altitud, compuestas por cristales de hielo que dispersaron la luz solar. This visual phenomenon was made possible by the specific weather conditions of that day, según explicó el meteorólogo Henry Delgado Manzor.
Is it common to see iridescence in Cuba?
Although it is not an extremely rare phenomenon, iridescence is not frequently observed in Cuba. It requires specific atmospheric conditions, such as the presence of Cirrocumulus clouds at high altitudes and suitable sunlight incidence.
What other unusual types of clouds have been recently seen in Cuba?
Recently, Asperitas clouds have been documented in Cuba, which have a wavy appearance and are quite rare. These clouds typically appear under conditions of atmospheric instability and create a significant visual impact due to their turbulent and dynamic look.
