A police officer was reportedly murdered in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, according to information from reporter and activist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

"Local sources report the alleged murder of a National Police (PNR) officer identified as Yoleysi, a resident of the Paraná neighborhood in the municipality of Palma Soriano," wrote Mayeta Labrada in a Facebook post this Sunday.

The murder allegedly took place on the night of last Friday, when the officer supposedly went to deliver a summons to a young man from the neighborhood, Labrada specified.

The young man, who was apparently under the influence of alcohol and tired of the constant threats, stabbed him between five and seven times, causing his death at the scene, said Labrada.

According to the post, neighbors claim that "the agent instilled fear and repression for years, especially against self-employed individuals, humble farmers, and young people from marginalized neighborhoods."

"He put too many innocent people behind bars. He was always with the sector chief Yoel Tase Suárez, alias El Mellizo, another dictator," said a resident to Labrada under conditions of anonymity.

The journalist asserts that this incident should be understood in a context, that of rural areas such as Palma Soriano, Contramaestre, Mella, or San Luis, where police abuses are constant and almost never reported.

"Here, there’s no one to stop them. They are the ones in charge. And if you don’t keep quiet, they’ll find you a problem," said another resident of the area to Mayeta Labrada.

However, many comments on Labrada's post condemn the murder and assert that nothing justifies this form of violence.

"Stabbing someone more than once is no longer about justice or self-defense; this was calculated coldly and enjoyed," said a user.

"My God, no matter how bad it was, no one should take anyone's life; there is no justification for such violence. Who will bell the cat? I can only imagine the desperation of that young man when he decided to take that step. I'm at a loss for words!" another person reflected.
