An Egyptian citizen attempting to reach the United States via irregular means was arrested in Havana as he was trying to board a flight to Nicaragua.

The case, documented in the television program "¡Alto! Frontera," went viral after its release on YouTube, where it shows how Cuban immigration authorities intercepted the passenger at José Martí International Airport.

As seen in the episode, recorded at Terminal 3 of Havana's airport, the man arrived in Cuba from Turkey with a tourist visa, claiming that he came to spend his vacation.

However, authorities became suspicious when the Egyptian citizen attempted to fly to Nicaragua, a country known as a starting point for many irregular migrants heading towards the southern border of the United States.

During the intervention, the Egyptian -clearly agitated- began to shout and plead: "Cuba, Cuba! Not Turkey, please! Cuba tourism, Cuba visa!", desperate upon realizing that the authorities would force him to return to his country.

At one point in the video, a lieutenant colonel approaches him and, in rudimentary English, indicates that he should accompany him to his office: "No problems, let's go," he tells him.

Once inside the elevator, the soldier tries to be more direct, warning him that to go to Nicaragua he must fly from Istanbul, not from Havana, which reveals the authorities' intention to repatriate him.

The traveler, aware of his imminent fate, sits on the ground and pleads once again not to be sent back to Turkey. He claims to have a hotel reservation in Cuba for nine days, trying to prove that his visit is for tourism.

But the authorities did not believe him/her.

According to the official version presented on the program, the man confessed that his true intention was to reach Nicaragua and then cross into the United States through the known "coyotes" and human trafficking networks.

The lieutenant colonel added that many of these Egyptian citizens are Christians from coastal areas of their country, and they migrate because "they fear for their lives" in a predominantly Muslim country.

Despite the fact that the Egyptian did not commit any crime on Cuban territory, he was forced to take a flight back to his country without any charges being filed against him.

The military leader who oversaw the intervention emphasized that "emigration is a universal right," as long as it is done through legal channels. He also underscored that "Cuba has the obligation to protect its integrity."

The case generated divided opinions on social media.

In the comments of the video, a user questioned the attitude of the Cuban government: "The Egyptian tourist wasn't allowed to continue to Nicaragua, supposedly due to immigration concerns towards the United States, but hundreds of thousands of Cubans were allowed to leave for Nicaragua-USA and never returned, and everyone in Cuba knew that those who went wouldn't come back. Nobody stopped them. And the poor Egyptian, who has made countless sacrifices, won't be allowed to continue. It's a mockery."

Frequently Asked Questions about Irregular Immigration and the Case of the Egyptian Citizen in Cuba

Why was the Egyptian citizen detained at Havana airport?

The Egyptian citizen was apprehended because he was attempting to fly to Nicaragua, a common starting point for migrants seeking to reach the United States irregularly. Cuban authorities suspected his migratory intentions and decided to intervene, forcing him to return to his country of origin.

What role does Cuba play in the migration routes to the United States?

Cuba is often used as a transit point by migrants seeking to reach Nicaragua and then continue to the United States. The Cuban government, however, plays a role of control and surveillance to prevent these routes from becoming established, returning migrants to their countries of origin if they suspect irregular attempts.

Why do migrants choose Nicaragua as a route to the United States?

Nicaragua is seen as a viable starting point due to its more flexible policies regarding the entry of foreigners and its proximity to the southern border of the United States. This facilitates the use of human trafficking networks operating in the region.

How does the political situation in home countries affect irregular migration?

The political instability, religious persecution, and economic limitations are factors that drive many to emigrate from their home countries. In the case of the Egyptian citizen detained in Cuba, his fear of the situation in his country, where many Christians face risks, was a key motivator to seek a new life in the United States.
