A concerning outbreak of canine distemper is worrying several families and animal protectors in the province of Las Tunas, where multiple cases have been reported in recent days.
The organization Bienestar Animal Comunitario Las Tunas BAC-Las Tunas raised concerns on social media about the seriousness of the situation, calling it one of the worst outbreaks they have seen in a long time.
The disease is highly contagious and lethal, especially for puppies and unvaccinated dogs, and according to the organization, it has spread rapidly, causing concern among pet owners and local activists.
BAC-Las Tunas emphasized that several families are already being affected and the situation continues to worsen, which is why they urged to intensify preventive measures.
Among the recommendations issued by the organization are to take dogs out only if absolutely necessary, to avoid all contact with other animals even if they appear healthy or well-cared-for, and to wash their paws upon returning home while keeping their environment clean.
The virus is easily transmitted through secretions, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces and can pose a risk to apparently healthy animals.
"Do not let your guard down, not even with the neighbor's little dog," insisted the group that regrets the lack of awareness and effective protocols to contain the outbreak, animal rights activists indicated.
BAC-Las Tunas called on the community to protect their loved ones and to help spread the alert, hoping that this nightmare ends soon and that as few furry friends as possible are affected.
Last Thursday, the organization BAC-Habana (Animal Welfare Cuba) alerted on Facebook about the emergence of unusual behaviors in felines that could indicate the presence of the rabies virus, and made an urgent call to act with caution and responsibility, without promoting fear or rejection towards animals.
