When shoddy work prevails: They fill trenches with stones in the heart of Vedado

Neighbors report the makeshift and hazardous filling of a ditch on Calle M, between 19 and 21, one of the busiest streets in Vedado, Havana.

A new example of urban improvisation and negligence has come to light in the very heart of Vedado, as authorities filled a pothole at one of the main corners of this Havana neighborhood with stones.

Local residents reported on social media that a trench opened on M Street, between 19 and 21, has been filled with stones, without asphalt or concrete, endangering road safety and mobility on one of the busiest arteries in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality.

According to the report shared on social media by Jorge L. Morell González in the Facebook group "El Vedado de Hoy", the affected section is not only essential due to its connection with the daily life of the neighborhood, but it also serves as an alternative route during large events on the Havana seawall.

"Here are the photos of how the street turned out. One of the busiest and most important in Vedado," Morell posted, accompanied by images showing the makeshift filling made with loose stones and even crushed beer cans.

One of the responses given by the authorities to the complaint was that “it could not be covered at this time because there was no way to do so.”

The explanation has sparked outrage among the neighbors, who find it unacceptable to leave a road in such conditions due to a lack of resources or planning.

The discomfort intensifies upon seeing how other nearby areas with similar issues have received a more fitting solution.

It is the case of 21st Street, between L and N, where similar work was done, but the hole was covered with cement and is awaiting an asphalt layer.

"In the area, another similar job was done (21st Street between L and N) and someone covered it with cement; it is awaiting asphalt," said Morell González.

The danger is not insignificant. The poorly covered ditch poses a potential risk to vehicles, motorcyclists, and pedestrians, warns the internet user.

Morell also reported that an inspector from the state-run Aguas de La Habana recently visited the neighbors who filed the complaint and is currently gathering information.
