A Cuban remains in serious condition after being hit by a taxi driver while riding his motorcycle in the city of Tapachula, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

According to Diario del Sur, the accident occurred on Central Sur, upon reaching the traffic light located at Central Oriente, in the central neighborhood of this border city in southern Mexico, a migrant hotspot where a significant group of Cubans has settled.

The unidentified Cuban was struck on the left side of his orange motorcycle by a taxi with economic number 0728, the information specifies.

After the impact, the Cuban was left lying on the pavement with serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital by paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross. Local merchants had alerted 911.

The taxi driver was at fault for the collision, as he cut off the motorcyclist by making an illegal turn in the central lanes.

He was made available to the authorities and charged with bodily injury and property damage. Additionally, he will receive a citation for lack of precaution.

The cancellation of the CBP One program has left many Cuban migrants without a clear path to legally enter the United States.

This has led to many considering staying in Mexico as a viable alternative, as they face difficulties advancing north and fears of being deported or getting stuck in precarious conditions along the way.

Tapachula, once regarded merely as a gateway, became the only possible destination for many Cubans.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), responsible for protecting people displaced by conflicts or persecution, estimates that in 2024 approximately 80,000 asylum applications were received in Mexico. The most common nationalities are Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

In June, a young Cuban migrant who became paralyzed in a serious traffic accident in Mexico while attempting to reach the border with the United States returned to his hometown in Las Tunas.
