More than three decades after the brutal murder of the jeweler Dionisio Carlos Valladares in his store in Southwest Miami, authorities have arrested and formally charged Omar Roy, a 72-year-old man whose name has been in case records since 1992, with first-degree murder.

Roy was arrested on Wednesday by the Miami Police, who claim to have enough evidence to directly link him to the crime that occurred on May 6, 1992, reported Telemundo 51.

That day, Valladares was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in the back of his business, Joyería Zamora, located at 1006 Southwest and 1st Street.

According to a sworn statement submitted to the court, Roy's fingerprints were found on a phone and on a broken mirror inside the premises.

In addition, just a few days after the crime, on May 15, 1992, Roy was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) for attempting to flee from the police.

In their vehicle, authorities found a significant amount of jewelry hidden inside a baby diaper, which led to charges of grand theft and trafficking in stolen goods.

It was later determined that those jewels belonged to those stolen from the Valladares jewelry store on the day of the murder.

During a prison interview in July 1992, Roy claimed that an unknown person entered the store and shot Valladares while he was hiding.

However, her testimony was never entirely consistent, and the case remained unresolved.

In August 2014, the case was reopened, and investigators discovered that Valladares had last been seen with Roy at the café adjacent to the jewelry store.

In May 2025, a new detective took over the investigation and identified multiple contradictions in Roy's previous testimonies.

When questioned again this Wednesday, the accused gave incoherent statements and admitted to having lied in previous interviews.

During the hearing held this Thursday, Roy's defense attorney questioned the strength of the case:
"There is no evidence that Mr. Roy shot the victim or that he had a weapon in his possession," he declared.

However, Judge Mindy Glazer responded firmly: "I believe there is probable cause based on the four key points of the affidavit. This is a case that has been thoroughly investigated, and the authorities believe that Mr. Roy committed this crime."

Glazer also recalled that Roy was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 1993, which adds weight to the decision to deny him bail. The defendant appeared before a division judge this Friday.

The Valladares case is another example of how unresolved crimes can have a new chapter, even more than 30 years later.

Authorities assure that they will continue to reexamine old cases using new technologies and investigative equipment.

In recent months, several cases have been resolved, including the mysterious murder in Miami-Dade 62 years ago of local businessman Joseph DiMare. Upon review, the police determined that Frances DiMare, the victim's wife, was indeed the one who shot Joseph in the head.
