A cyclist died after being hit by a car on the stretch of the National Highway that runs through Matanzas, near Jagüey Grande, this Wednesday.

The fatal traffic accident occurred at kilometer 142 of the country's main highway when the cyclist was trying to cross from Jagüey Grande to Australia, as reported by the Facebook profile “Con Todos La Victoria”, affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior.

According to the official version of events, the cyclist did not stop at the designated signal on that stretch of the road and was struck by a car traveling from Havana towards Cienfuegos.

The investigations conducted by the authorities determined that the responsibility for this unfortunate accident lay with the cyclist. "Complying with Law 109 (Traffic Safety Code) prevents the loss of human lives," the publication warned.

The most recent official statistics released by the Cuban state press indicate that, between January and May of this year, there was a decrease in traffic accidents compared to 2024.

The number of injured individuals also decreased during that period; however, the fatalities increased as a consequence of these events, mainly among pedestrians and drivers and passengers of bicitaxis, motorcycles, and mopeds.

The National Road Safety Commission reported that in the first five months of 2025, there were 3,035 traffic accidents, resulting in 2,670 injured and 290 fatalities.
