Yuniesky Gurriel returns to Cuba with his family after six years of absence

His return contrasts with the situation of his brother Yulieski, a Major League star and batting champion in 2021, whom the Cuban government denied entry in 2022 despite having served the prohibition period established for athletes who leave national teams.

After more than five years away from his homeland, the former Cuban player Yuniesky Gurriel returned to Cuba accompanied by his wife, Jennifer Casares, and their children.

The visit, the first in six years, included stops at iconic locations in Havana and Sancti Spíritus, filled with nostalgia and family reunions, according to the independent media outlet Swing Completo.

The images from the trip were shared on social media by Casares, who expressed the excitement of showing his children "the place where we were born, the food that raised us, the music that we always carry in our souls" and introducing them to relatives they had not yet met.

Among the places visited were the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís, the Havana waterfront, the Julio Antonio Mella school, and the José Antonio Huelga stadium. There was also a special moment at the Gurriel family's home in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

"It was a journey full of emotions, memories, laughter, and tears... Returning home, even if just for a few days, heals the soul," Casares wrote, emphasizing the importance of connecting his children with their roots.

Yuniesky, the oldest of the Gurriel brothers, played for Sancti Spíritus, Industriales, and the national team before emigrating to the United States in 2019, where he has excelled as a batting coach in Miami. He has worked with players such as Yasiel Puig, Mauricio Dubón, Ezequiel Tovar, and his own brothers, Yulieski and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

His return contrasts with the situation of his brother Yulieski, a Major League star and batting champion in 2021, to whom the Cuban government denied entry in 2022 despite having completed the prohibition period established for athletes who abandon national teams. The case generated controversy and highlighted the restrictions that some Cuban athletes still face when visiting the island.

While Yulieski continues to be unable to return, Yuniesky has successfully closed a personal chapter by reuniting with his people and landscapes. His journey, more than just a simple return, has been an opportunity for his children to experience firsthand the culture and bonds that are part of the Gurriel family's history.
