The young journalist Enrique Pérez Fumero, who was the victim of a brutal attack in Santiago de Cuba in early August, continues his delicate recovery process in the hospital after undergoing two surgical procedures.
In the latest update on Pérez Fumero's condition, Víctor Hugo Leyva, president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC), shared encouraging news this Wednesday, even though Fumero's clinical status remains serious.
“It has been 48 hours since he/she last had a fever, is eating better, and his/her vital signs are stable,” he/she reported.
He added that "the surgical wound is healing favorably" and, although it is still "reported as serious," these are "good signs" that allow for a faint sense of optimism.
He emphasized that the journalist is “under constant surveillance,” which highlights both the complexity of the case and the medical attention he is receiving.
Leyva also acknowledged that, due to work commitments, he had not been able to personally visit the hospital, but he noted that he maintained direct contact with the doctors in charge.
The evolution since August 17th
The previous updates indicated a slow but steady progress in the recovery of the journalist, who has already undergone two surgical procedures since the attack.
August 17: Leyva informed that the colleague was "generally stable despite his severity." Although "febrile syndromes associated" had appeared, these were "controlled with treatment." Neurologically, he also showed stability: "neurologically stable." Additionally, there was mention of a constant search for "the best alternatives with medications" and the presence of "ongoing monitoring of his evolution."
August 18: The report provided that day reflected some progress.
"He remains neurologically stable, with no complications thus far. The fever has decreased. The surgical wound is healing well," detailed the president of UPEC.
Likewise, the vital signs were within the normal range, and his clinical behavior was positive: "he is communicative and cooperative."
That day, a "change of antibiotics to state-of-the-art medications" was implemented, while monitoring for potential complications arising from their "prolonged stay" in hospital care.
August 19: The evolution continued steadily, although without significant changes.
The young journalist was "stable in his condition" and was able to maintain a "minimal dialogue."
He had not had a fever in the previous 24 hours and was still on "broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment that does not need to be adjusted at this time." Vital signs remained "normal," and the emphasis on "continuous monitoring" was reiterated.
A still critical situation, but with encouraging signs
The report from August 21, more detailed than the previous ones, consolidates the trend of a moderately positive evolution.
The absence of fever for 48 hours and improvement in feeding are clinical signs of recovery, although the designation of "severe" is still maintained.
The evolution of the "surgical wound" is key in this process, just as the constant neurological evaluation to which the journalist is subjected.
The second operation, performed at the Saturnino Lora hospital, was scheduled as part of his treatment following the serious cranial injuries he sustained during the assault.
In the first surgery, conducted after an MRI in Las Tunas, the specialists had already noted the complexity of his clinical condition.
Pérez Fumero, Doctor in Communication Sciences, radio producer, and university professor, was brutally attacked in the early hours of August 3, allegedly for his shoes, cell phone, and wallet, and it is suspected that there may have been a homophobic component to the assault.
The incident, which shocked the city and the journalistic community, occurs within a context of rising violence in the country.
While family members, colleagues, and citizens continue to demand justice, authorities have not provided details regarding the investigation or any potential arrests related to the assault.
So far, the assailants of Enrique Pérez Fumero have not been identified or apprehended.
