Authorities in Santiago de Cuba are investigating the discovery of a dismembered body found on Tuesday night, which may be related to the human head discovered the previous morning in a dumpster in the Salao neighborhood, in Micro III.

According to reported by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta, “the body was removed last night from an apartment on the third floor, where other body parts were found that might match the head discovered earlier in a trash container.”

According to sources close to the case, the stepson of a man recently reported missing went to attempt to identify the head, but was unable to confirm the identity due to the advanced state of decomposition.

Among the versions circulating in the area, the name of Ángel Luis Mercantety, a 74-year-old citizen, is mentioned, who was reported missing several days ago.

Residents of the area claim that Mercantety used to frequent the home where the human remains were found, which has fueled suspicions that it could be him.

However, as of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the identity of the remains. Forensic specialists are working on identifying the body.

In another post, Mayeta Labrada indicated that the missing man, who is presumed to have been dismembered, lived in Planta, in the Altamiram Council, and that his daughter and grandson still reside there.

The killer is captured

On the other hand, the government-aligned profile Héroes del Moncada reported this Wednesday morning on the capture of the alleged perpetrator of the crime.

The suspect would be a 60-year-old citizen from whom parts of the victim's body were found at his residence.

The individual -whose identity was not disclosed- confessed to "having violently taken his life while they were consuming alcoholic beverages inside his apartment on August 21, motivated by a personal score to settle."

Macabre discovery

It all started on the morning of August 26, when workers from the Comunales Company found a human head inside a garbage container in Micro 3 of the Abel Santamaría Urban Center, commonly known as “El Salao”.

According to the previous report from Yosmany Mayeta himself, the head was "swollen and decomposing," and it was exposed when the container was emptied into a dump truck.

Residents of the area also confirmed on social media that the container was located in a central spot, between the gas station and the MLC store in the neighborhood, which heightened the shock of those who witnessed the scene.

Some also recalled that a person had been reported missing in the neighborhood for several days, specifically Ángel Luis Mercantety, who would initially be identified as the fatal victim of such a gruesome murder.
