A Cuban citizen sentenced in 2024 for human trafficking was deported from the United States after being detained again by immigration authorities, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the individual had been found guilty last year of attempting to illegally smuggle 29 people, including several minors, in the back of a tractor trailer, in what authorities described as a “reckless and dangerous act.”
The man, whose identity was not revealed, was taken into custody by the Miami Sector of the Border Patrol and handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation.
"We will not tolerate human traffickers," stated CBP in its message on social media platform X, emphasizing that this type of crime endangers innocent lives and poses a threat to the border security of the United States.
CBP points out that the deportation is part of the "zero tolerance" policy that Washington applies against those involved in human trafficking networks, particularly in the border states and in Florida, where authorities have intensified operations against these illicit activities.
The entity has not specified the country to which the immigrant was deported.
An unspecified number of Cubans with criminal records have been arrested and deported during this period; however, there have also been documented cases of immigrants from the island without a criminal history or final deportation order who have been detained in ICE centers and are facing expulsion processes.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), by the end of 2024, there were over 42,000 Cubans with final deportation orders in the United States.
